SHENANDOAH ASSOCIATION

FALL MEETING MINUTES

October 21, 2007

St. Paul’s UCC, Woodstock, VA

Barbara Rhodes, Association Council President, called the meeting to order.

Conference Minister John Deckenback reviewed recent developments in the Conference and in the UCC’s national operation.

Barbara Rhodes announced that the Rev. Julie Overman’s installation service will take place on November 4 at 2 pm at St. Paul’s UCC (Woodstock).

Bob Harmon, the pastor of Grace UCC (Mt. Jackson) announced that the $2,500 Grace made from its apple butter sales would be contributed – with a matching donation from the Woodmen of the World -- to the John Ware fund for a total of $5,000.  Total donations to the fund to date are approximately $13,900.

St. John’s (Hamburg) is holding a trunk-or-treat party for local youth on October 31 from 6-8 pm.  All are welcome to fill their car trunks with candy for children who generally are not able to go trick or treating because they live in a rural area and join the festivities.

A quorum being declared by Barbara Rhodes, the business meeting began at approximately 6:15 pm.

Marilyn Heishman reviewed the proposed 2008 budget.  Regarding the task force line items, Marilyn stressed that these funds are available for churches to use in putting together programs that are available to others in the Association.  The ACM invited Association churches to use task force funds to help them do what they do well and to share it with other churches.

The ACM noted that the budget assumes deficit spending.  The Association wants to draw down its reserves to fund programs that benefit our churches.  This draw down will need to be taken into account in setting the budget for future years.   The Association will have to determine which core activities it wants to fund and how to fund them.  The student-in-care program, through which the Association currently helps defray seminary expenses for two students, was mentioned as one such core program.

The MOTION to approve the budget PASSED unanimously.

On behalf of the Association, Marilyn Heishman thanked Linda Argabright for her exemplary service as Council Treasurer for the past six years.

A MOTION to adjourn passed by consensus.

                                                                             Respectfully submitted,

                                                                             Leslie Nickel, Secretary
